I started my bench yesterday.  There is a bunch of rough cut oak from the property, so I decided to use it.  It may not be traditional, but its free.  Picked a board, planed it down and rough cut all the parts for the two leg sections.  I used the planer and table saw to cut everything.  Used the band saw to cut the tenons.  I did the mortises with a drill to take out the bulk and finished with a chisel.  For my first mortise and tenons, I’m pretty happy with them.  As much as I am on an old tool kick, I’d have loved to do it all by hand, but oak is tough stuff and I wanted to finish sometime this year.  But I’m happy with how I sharpened the chisels.  I barely used a mallet.  Four of the eight mortises to finish on the legs and they’ll be done, minus some detailing.
