Bonehead move (or this is why I hate shopping)…
Went to a friend’s neighbors today because they were selling the contents of her father’s wood shop. Thought I was in for some cool tools. There were nice tools, but nothing special, and they researched well and prices were a bit high for the things that I didn’t already have.
They had his wood storage room appraised and wanted a few thousand for it, which may have been worth it to someone who builds and sells furniture. But I noticed a shelf off to the side stacked with thin pieces. I asked about it and they said “oh, they came from the Martin Guitar factory”. I guess he knew someone who worked there and they appear to be seconds.
To make my long story short, she had no idea what to ask for them. I’m a horrible shopper and certainly bad at making an offer on something like that. I was a bit overwhelmed. So I only left with a pair of 8.25” x 21.5” spruce top boards and a two pair of sides (not sure on the wood) for a few bucks to take home and research. They may be seconds to Martin, but 75% would probably work for me. There were probably 60 or so spruce tops (8.25” x 21.5”), some full mahogany backs, and a stack of exotics which were a bit narrow at 6” wide x 21.5” long, all about 1/8” thick. Plus tons of random sizes and species.
I feel like a dumb ass right after I left. I emailed to see if I could pick up more next week and to see what she would want for the entire shelf. We will see.
