I guess I neglect to update every so often. My first three steel string guitars, and my 3rd, 4th and 5th total, are finished. Took quite a while. I used micro mesh to polish out the lacquer after it cured. … Continue reading →
Played a gig on upright last night. It was a party at a house out in the country. Weather was beautiful. It rained for 5 minutes at a set break. So I took a quick pic of a nice double rainbow.
Ran into some old friends. Was also offered to take a bunch of local wood from trees on the property. Including some Osage orange. Sweet.
Saw Charlie Hunter and Scott Amendola tonight. Just heard about it yesterday and got tickets. Don’t think it was promoted well by a local jazz festival. Had great seats in a small venue. It was fantastic! Probably one of the most inspired performances I’ve seen in a long time.
All packed for a gig tonight. Playing upright bass in a jazz trio. Three hour set. I’m really rusty but it should be fun, hand cramps and all.
Playing out two Fridays in a row. I’d love to do that more often.
Don’t know if you’ve heard about this new documentary about the legendary music of Muscle Shoals yet. It was just shown at Sundance with good reviews. Most of you who read my nonsense know that I rarely post anything but my own pics, but I’ll make an exception, as this is relevant to my next week.
So, a road trip…
Got a call last week from a friend who asked me if I wanted to go to the premier of this documentary, in Muscle Shoals AL, next Wednesday. Had tickets to the VIP party, movie premier and concert. Um… Yes! This is right up my alley. Just needed to re-arrange my schedule a bit, book a room and load up my iphone for 13 hours of driving music.
Before and after of my music room… I could call it a studio, but I really don’t have any recording gear. Not sure what I was thinking with the red a few years ago, it was horrible. Anyway, its much … Continue reading →
Went to two parties last night. One right across the street in a gorgeous house. Talked local business with the hosts, the mayor and other folks. Next party at my friends house. Played upright bass with the other musicians there and drank German beer. A little fuzzy this morning, such a lightweight these days, snow shoveling helped. Just got invited to a new years party by my local brewer friends, that should be fun. Some people consider themselves social butterflies. I’m starting to think of myself as a social moth.
Gotta knock some things out on the house so I can get moving on building my workshop in the basement. Itching to make stuff…
Played a rock gig on electric bass last night. First time in about 6 years. Had a 30 minute set of 5 originals and one cover. Sang one tune, only my second time singing in public. Practiced 3 times in the last 2 weeks. I was worried how it would turn out after just learning the tunes at the first rehearsal.
It went fairly well. Can’t complain. It was fun. I bet we could kick ass with regular practice. Guess we should work on that.
Vintage 1939? Leedy vibraphone that I bought and restored a year ago. New strings, springs, post isolators. 12 hours of chrome polishing. Now I wish I played. Fortunate to have friends that play well.
Made this lamp for my music room a few years ago. Used French horn from local antique store, old walnut plank and a shade from an old lamp that I had. Made the base to mirror the size of the shade.
